How Can Smart Growth Work in Northeast Ohio?

The Smart Growth Education Foundation has begun working with local governments to help them accommodate growth and meet the community's increasing housing demands while preserving natural resources and utilizing existing infrastructure as efficiently as possible.

Through a combination of higher-density new development, rehabilitation of existing homes and redevelopment of urban centers, the future housing needs of our population can be met with a diverse and affordable supply of homes, condominiums and apartment buildings. For example, cluster development - grouping homes on the more buildable portions of a site - allows developers to leave more open space, to preserve natural features and to reduce the costs of extending sewers and roads. Also, including affordable housing in large planned communities gives options for all segments of the home buying market.

The goal of the Smart Growth Education Foundation is to educate homebuyers, community planners, government officials, environmental groups and other audiences about various development options. It is important to build a consensus among the various stakeholders involved with the growth of our region. Members of the Smart Growth Education Foundation have begun forming liaisons with organizations that have the same goal -- growing smarter in the new millennium.

These are the first steps in our smart growth movement in Northeast Ohio. With proper planning, our region can be prosperous, while still maintaining the aesthetic qualities this area has to offer.

The Smart Growth Education Foundation was formed to present a unified voice for the home builders and related industries of Northeast Ohio concerning the issues surrounding the Smart Growth movement in America. The Foundation represents and is funded by home builders in the counties of Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Erie, Geauga, Huron, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, Stark and Summit.

The Smart Growth Education Foundation is educating citizens, local governments and other groups about efficient land use patterns and techniques that can preserve open spaces, use existing public infrastructure and help revitalize urban areas while still providing affordable housing to the thousands of new households formed in Northeast Ohio every year.
